Are hiking trails in Taiwan open? When will certain hiking trails be open again? What are the hiking trails that are open since Alert lowered to Level 2? Are mountain lodging open?
Recently a number of hiking trails have been closed and re-opened due to Covid-19 restrictions in Taiwan. But the information is scattered on different government websites, changing daily, and most of the Covid-19 announcements are in Mandarin.
I searched through dozens of government websites and built a list for hiking trail status, and decided to share with anyone who's looking for this information. I have kept the source as well, so you can find trail status & source links to keep up with the latest regulation. Hope this can help all people in Taiwan to access info for the outdoor restrictions without language barrier.
IMPORTANT NOTE
Although many trails have opened up, almost all of the National Parks and Recreational Areas have crowd control measures and limited capacity (Entrance control by head-counts and parking space reduced.)
The District Offices may also decide to close a trail when they perceive a risk of crowd.
How to quick search a trail Status
[Step 1] See trails under jurisdiction of various government units:
Find "Search Icon🔍" on the upper right corner, and search by trail name.
[Step 2] Find find the latest Trail Status & Daily Capacity Limit for the trails under jurisdiction of Forestry Bureau.
Go to Taiwan Forestry Bureau's website(EN) (CN), scroll down and search by trail name.

Heads-up for Going Hiking Now
Good news and bad news---As there have been a lot less people in the mountains, more wildlife has been spotted. But besides cuties like muntjacs, snakes are a lot more common to be spotted chilling out. ([7/17 Update] There were a group of hikers encountered a Taiwan bear.)
And it's not just the animals who came out and play, many trails have been covered by overgrown bushes at the moment (oops)... Nature is taking over!
But no worries, just pay a little attention and enjoy!
Bring a hiking pole, or pick up a branch to let the snakes know you are coming their way.
Pay a little more attention to your surroundings as trails are less traveled/maintained.
Lastly, one can still face fines of NT $3,000 - 15,000 for going into restricted areas. On a side-note, just a couple of weeks ago there was a guy who got injured and rescued on a restricted trail. He ended up facing a NT $60,000-300,000 fine under the Epidemic Disease Prevention and Control Act (Source: Apple Daily News CN).
Anyways, so happy that everyone's effort has paid off and kept the Covid-19 cases low. THANK YOU ALL!!! I'm very happy to see the government is also opening up the outdoors. Hope we can continue keeping the number down after the restrictions being relaxed!
